![]() How to Use VoIP?The way you make calls using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) depends on what equipment has the one who phones and the one who receives calls. There are three different ways to make calls that need to meet different requirements. The first and the easiest way to make calls using VoIP services is to call from computer to computer. The requirements you need to meet: This is the least expensive way to make VoIP calls as you already have all the equipment and may only need to purchase microphone or a headset. VoIP software (Skype, ICQ, Google Talk, etc) is usually offered for free by telecommunication companies or VoIP providers and can be easily downloaded from the Internet. Do not forget that both parties should have VoIP software installed. VoIP options include making calls on a LAN (Local Area Network) with enabled IP (Internet Protocol) that controls transferring of packets through the network. Adequate bandwidth is required to make telecommunication possible. VoIP that works over 50 kbps can be of low sound quality whereas 100 kbps bandwidth provides good sound quality for your telecommunication. Phone to phone communication may be handy but more difficult to set up and requires additional expenses at the first stage. A phone set is used by both parties who communicate using VoIP services. You have two VoIP options here: VoIP phones look like ordinary residential phones but work using IP and not PSTN (public switched telephone network). VoIP phones are connected to a gateway or router that makes telecommunication possible. VoIP phones use the same socket that your computer does. Wi-Fi may be used to connect to a network. VoIP adapters are fixed to your telephone to transform data transmitted over Internet protocol so that your telephone can 'understand' it. VoIP adapters convert your voice into digital data and then digital data is converted into voice. VoIP adapters are often included into the package in case you are subscribed for VoIP services. You can connect the VoIP adapter to your phone to make it work like VoIP phones work. In case you decide to terminate your VoIP services you can easily switch to normal phone by removing VoIP adapter. Combining these two ways you can organize telecommunication between PC and a phone. |
